Waltz: An elegant dance that develops "graceful movement and poise." Every wedding reception, "black-tie" formal, social and holiday party includes Waltz steps. Waltz is a slow dance with distinctive rise and fall motion. Fox Trot: Considered the most popular of all social dances. Some times referred to as the “Conversational Dance” because of it’s closeness and conversational ability at the same time.” This was the first dance that permitted people to hold each other closer than arm’s length. The Fox trot focuses on graceful glides. It’s good for developing “smoothness” and “ease of movement.” Tango: An exciting dance commonly referred to as the “Dancer’s Dance.” A staccato movement of the feet highlights the dramatic style of the Tango. Quickstep: As the name implies, the Quickstep is a very quick and lively dance. It originated as a quick form of Foxtrot. Quickstep is comprised of hops, skips and kicks set in with a smooth gliding motion. Rumba: Romantic, sensual Latin dance. The characteristic feature of Rumba is the Cuban Motion. Cha Cha: The all time favorite Latin dance. The Cha Cha rhythm is found in much of today’s popular music. Mambo: The spicy Mambo grew out of the Danzon (national music of Cuba). Mambo is a spot dance which incorporates Cuban motion. The dance itself is considered very sensual and fast moving. Salsa: A peppery version of the Mambo. Some call it a form of Latinized rock ‘n’ roll. It’s one of the most popular night club dances. Jive: This dance is the European version of East Coast swing. Jive is danced to a faster tempo using triple rhythms. It is usually danced to rock and roll or big band music. Samba: A very sensual latin dance that originated in Brazil. The characteristic feature of Samba is the Brazilian Nanago motion. East Coast Swing: East Coast swing is the base for all swing dances. Many different styles of music including contemporary music can be danced to East coast swing. The dance is performed in single, double, and triple rhythms. You can Rock and Roll with Swing. Merenge: A truly lively Latin dance. It’s point of origin is uncertain. Both Haiti and the Dominican Republic claim it. There is an old tale about a very brave and famous military officer who was wounded in battle and developed a limp. A celebration dance was given for the great hero returning from the war. Rather than embarrass their hero, who limped on his wounded leg while dancing, all the men present favored their leg as well, and thus the Merengue was born. Hustle: A member of the Swing family. It has a distinct flavor utilizing Disco style music. Hustle can be danced to the contemporary pop dance music of the last 20 years. It’s a fast, smooth dance. We also offer Balance classes and these classes are conducted at Heatherwoods.
